Initially focusing on wicker baby carriages, they quickly diversified into furniture, gaining acclaim in the mid-20th century for their innovative designs and premium rattan pieces--often in collaboration with renowned designers--like John Wisner.
Their furniture became a staple in resorts, hotels and homes, reflecting a relaxed, tropical vibe. This particular sofa and chair set--from the Bamboo Collection-- features the original cushions and brass accents on the arms.
John Wisner, who began his career with Ficks Reed in the 1940s, emerged as their most significant and influential designer. His vision played a crucial role in shaping the company's aesthetic for decades. Wisner was key in evolving Ficks Reed's offerings from traditional wicker to the sleek rattan furniture synonymous with mid-century modern design. He adopted innovative techniques and forms, drawing inspiration from global influences, especially from Asia. He crafted numerous iconic collections for Ficks Reed, which remain highly collectible today. Pieces from the Bamboo Collection featured bamboo-like rattan, imparting a distinct, often tropical or Chinoiserie-inspired style. While rattan was his main material, Wisner frequently incorporated glass tops, vibrant upholstered cushions and metal accents, creating functional yet stylish furniture. His designs resonated with the post-war yearning for relaxed living spaces, making his pieces ideal resorts, cruise ships, and homes that favored chic, informal aesthetic. Celebrated for their timelessness and craftsmanship, John B. Wisner's designs continue to highly sought after by mid-century modern furniture collectors and influence contemporary casual furniture design, defining the "look" of Ficks Reed for a significant era.
